When business leaders say "we need a repeatable and reproducible process" - what do they really mean?
Repeatable means an individual can consistently repeat the same process with the same quality, in the same timeframe, and with the same level of effort -- every time.
Reproducible means that others can also consistently perform the same process with the same quality, timeframe, and effort -- every time.
An easy way to remember is: Repeat - Me; Reproduce - You
Repeatability often happens naturally in professional services as individuals reuse previous artifacts to make it easier for them. However, this creates differences between individual processes and ultimately varying project outcomes.
Reproducibility can only happen when organization leaders proactively coach their team to combine, standardize, and actually utilize process best practices. This team effort ensures finding the true best practices and creates support & buy-in.
To ensure your processes repeatable and reproducible, there are a few high-level considerations:
Process input standards;
Defined & documented methodology;
Roles & responsibilities;
Trained employees;
Appropriate tools;
Established process measures;
Process owner oversight; and
Defined output expectations
Successful organizations invest in well-defined repeatable and reproducible processes to produce consistent effort, timelines, and quality outcomes.
