Reasons of Inaction

Writer's picture: Coach ScottCoach Scott

You hired a great staff. So when you see inaction, what’s the cause?

Inactivity happens when there is something missing around the 5 factors of ownership, workload, priority, objective, or process.

Statue representing inaction

For example, if my boss said we were going on a business trip to Paris:

  1. Ownership:  Is it clear who is taking the lead on planning that trip?

  2. Workload:  Do I have the bandwidth to complete the task?

  3. Priority:  Do I understand the priority of booking the trip versus other tasks?

  4. Objective:  Are we flying to Paris, France or driving to Paris, Texas?

  5. Process:  Is the process defined and are people trained on how to book that trip?

When good employees are unsure how to properly take the next steps, it gets stalled while they execute other clearly defined tasks they know how to complete.

So, next time you see good people not taking action, be the leader that solves the reasons of inaction by taking the responsibility to clarify these 5 factors.  Help your employees to perform their best.

That's my 8020 Framework.  What's yours?
