Be inefficient

Did you know it is possible to be efficient by being inefficient?!?!?!

One of my closets is currently disorganized.  However, due to a change in circumstances, I need it to be organized.  So, why didn't I start off having an organized closet in the first place?  Well I didn't because I had plenty of space and these were low utilized items, so there was no value to make it truly organized.  In fact, I would have spent more time making it efficient, without gaining any value, and could have spent that time on other efficiency projects.  So I just placed items in the closet.  I was efficient by not being efficient.

Now that my circumstances have changed, I now need an organized closet.  So, now I'm going to take the effort to apply Lean's 5S concepts.  I'll discard items (sort), organize (set), clean (shine), standardize, and maintain (sustain) it.  Then, I'll have an organized closet for my new requirements.

So the point of the story is - don't take on an efficiency project when there isn't a need or a value to the organization.  Instead, focus in areas where there is the greatest value to be gained.

That's my 8020 Framework.  What's yours?
