Ask Why?

You may be familiar with the 5W's and 2H's - where, what, when, who, why, how, and how much.  All great questions to understand the scope and learn more.  But there are three you should always ask to be a life-learner.

My two favorite questions have always been:  "How" and "How much".  "How" does something work or the job get done?  And, "How much" gives insights into costs and value providing an ROI.  But another very important question to ask is "Why?".

Person learning in the library

We all know kids like to ask endless questions of "Why, Why, Why?".   As parents, it can get annoying and we finally answer "Just Because!".  Maybe that's why at some point people stop asking "Why".  Yet, it is one of the most important questions to  be a life learner.  We can always learn a fact.  It's only when we ask  "Why" that gives us that deeper understanding and context.

For example, Elephants like to eat leaves from a certain tree.  OK, you've learned a fact.  But, asking "why do they like those leaves?" -- with the answer because it is sweet -- provides learning that can then be applied more broadly.

So, next time you get a chance, be sure to ask "Why".  Just try not to be too annoying!

That's my 8020 Framework.  What's yours?
